General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced on April 20 that the company would allow workers to determine where they would work — on premises or at home.

In a LinkedIn post, Barra said that “where the work permits, employees have the flexibility to work where they can have the greatest impact on achieving our goals.”

The policy is based on the idea that “our employees are capable of making smart decisions without overly prescriptive guidance,” she said.

Barra acknowledged that not all workers would be equally able to take advantage of the new policy. Among other efforts to help more workers access remote work, she said the company may allow online training to be completed either from work or from home.
