Remote work spurred  by the Covid-19 health crisis led to a spike in cybercrime last year, with 5,258 data breaches occurring worldwide in 2020 alone, according to a study by Verizon.

The Verizon 2021 Data Breach Investigations Report revealed phishing attacks increased 11 percent from the previous year, with misrepresentation increasing 15 times compared to 2019.

In addition, 61 percent of data breaches involved credential data, with 95 percent of organizations suffering credential attacks with 3.3 billion login attempts through the year. Eighty-three percent of data compromised in the financial and insurance industries were personal data, while in the scientific and tech industries only 49 percent of data were personal.

The Verizon report analyzed 29,207 security incidents collected from 83 contributors across 88 countries and 12 industries.
